Unleash Your Inner Artist at Disney's Hidden Gem: The Animation Experience at Conservation Station
One of the neatest and somewhat little known experiences I have had at Disney is the Animation Experience at Conservation Station. Many folks ask me, aside from rides, what things they can do at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and this has to be on your list for your visit. Again, this is a longstanding experience over in Rafiki’s Planet Watch but is
not widely known because of its secluded location.
So many folks are into art these days, especially kids and if you even have a remote interest, I definitely suggest you check out this 25 minute experience. You will come into a studio with an actual animator who will give you some of the history of Disney animation and more specifically how it relates to the character you will be drawing.
Characters change daily so you can develop a collection of your own original animation with each new visit!
I will say, I am not an artist by any means, but I gave this very simplified, step by step process a try and I had an absolute blast! And I was so pleasantly surprised at my final product! There were folk of all ages participating. Such a fun educational, yet intimate experience and an inside look at the talent of Disney animators! Disney’s
website describes this activity as such.
"Draw Your Own Disney Character"
Uncover the secret of how Disney animators bring your favorite characters to life—using real life animals as inspiration! Let your creativity shine—no matter your skill level—as a talented Disney animator gives you step-by-step instructions on how to illustrate your own version of a popular Disney character. Each 25-minute class will offer something different. Featured Characters change periodically, so you can keep adding to your art collection!”
This experience does not require reservations ahead of time, but keep in mind it stops earlier than park close each day so you will need to be mindful of that if you want to participate. There are several time offerings throughout each day. And as I mentioned before, all ages are welcome, but keep in mind the nearly 30 minute duration, especially for smaller children.
If you are looking for something a little out of the box, that you will be able to bring home a souvenir for everyone at no additional costs and if you have some little budding artists in your travel party, this is ideal to schedule into your park day at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. It is great for a break time or unwinding period as well with the shaded calming train ride to and from the class also. Sometimes it’s not all about rides, so many times it is about the memories we
make!
Pro tip: If you plan to do this activity, bring a small school folder in your backpack to store those works of art in, so that they make it home and to your scrapbook, fridge, or picture frames in good condition! You may want to make this a tradition for each visit and collecting those drawings would be great memories in years to come!
