What a crazy experience. Last week I participated in my very first RunDisney event, the Princess 1/2 Marathon! To say this is a thrilling and challenging event would be a gross understatement. Just for reference, the first marathon, run in January 1994, featured 5,588 runners. This marathon was the first race that launched the Disney Endurance Series, which is now RunDisney. Events under the RunDisney umbrella go from sunrise yoga to full marathons and have been held all over the globe. These events are now attended by thousands of runners and spectators alike and like most things Disney, the events have developed that immense cult following. Which I never really understood fully until my experience at the Princess 1/2.
While I still do not consider myself a runner by any means, this experience was something I would never forget and I hate to admit it, but I’m already thinking of committing to future RunDisney events…..just maybe not a 1/2 marathon. Who’s idea was that anyway?
Registration usually takes place many many months prior to your chosen race weekend so that you will have ample time to train and prepare. And keep in mind, that they usually sell out on the day of release, so you’ll want to get connected with the RunDisney site so that you’ll know in advance and be able to choose what’s right for you!
Just from this experience, I can tell you, I could not have done this race alone. Having a race companion was absolutely key for me. We could encourage and motivate one another throughout the 13.1 to make sure we crossed that beautiful finish line in the distance. And something that I think makes a RunDisney race special is the distractions you encounter along the way! Not only do you find yourself running thru your favorite parks, but you’ll find bands, cheerleaders, DJs, rare characters, and more to help you power thru to the end!
I can tell you, when we came under the tunnel in Magic Kingdom and I saw all those spectators cheering with signs and everything, it was one of the most unique trips down Main Street I have ever made and something I will never forget! And let’s not forget about running thru Cinderella Castle! Unbelievable! The 1/2 also took us thru pieces of Epcot as well! So there is no shortage of scenery along the way to keep you going!
Another thing I really liked is the fact that like most other races, Disney had different corrals, pacing groups, etc. so anyone that wanted to attempt these magical races was welcomed with open arms to do so. Medical tents, water stations, and volunteers everywhere, this race was also full of support and safety provisions.
Staying on Disney property during race weekend is another great advantage when participating in these races. Resorts had runners packs of snacks, special treats, celebration parties for the runners, and the critically necessary transportation to and from the race for both runners and their supporters! Although don’t get me wrong, boarding that race bus at 3:30 am is not for the faint of heart!
Overall, as much as I hated to admit it at first, this was a blast! A great experience and something that I will definitely participate in again. There are literally activities and inclusions for all fitness levels at all RunDisney events and lots of support from your fellow athletes! Oh and don’t forget, if you are so inclined you are encouraged to run dressed up as a favorite character or theme! You know that Disney never misses out on a chance for a good theme! So get connected with RunDisney if you are interested and pick a race to start with! I guarantee you, you will not be sorry!
